What is aging in place?
January 10, 2019
Simply put, aging in place means living and staying in your own home and community as long as you’re able to do so safely. Aging in place is becoming the ideal choice for many seniors and their families as more social, emotional, and health benefits are uncovered.
A common misunderstanding with aging in place is that the senior needs to do everything independently. Aging in place allows you to customize and incorporate the help you need in order to stay home. In most cases, additional help from a family member, friend, or hired caregiver, is a key ingredient in staying in the comfort of your own home.
A lot can be said for keeping your environment and routines consistent. Feeling comfortable in your surroundings is vital to staying healthy. Moving out of one’s home creates stress and social pressure to acclimate to a new place. Staying in your own home allows you to maintain your independence and continue your day-to-day activities. Being at home and surrounded by your own belongings, immersed in familiar sights and sounds will also help retain memory function, improve health and longevity. Living at home also helps retain social connections in your community and is one way to help avoid social isolation among the elderly.
